Beggars were seen “working” only in the morning and evening peak hours. Other than that, they were seen staying at a budget hotel in Geylang and Aljunied Area. Some of these “professional beggars”
are either with missing arms, legs or using wheelchairs. These were the highlights in one of the article in the Staits Time.
After reading through the ST, I encountered with few of them during one of my trip to the wet market near the aljunied area with my Mum. Seeing them on one hand is quite pitiful but on the other hand,as my eyes were looking around, i could see few guys placing themselves at a strategic points as a lookout while reading newspaper over them. Only then, did i know that there were “lookouts” or minders as stated in the ST.
Since it was a Sunday morning, the beggars were seen easily receiving donations from Kind and generous Singaporeans. A while later, as i was hanging around near my car as my mum did all the “marketing. I saw the beggar standing up and proceeding nearby to a rubbish dump area where he was then approached
by the minders and they quickly left the area, and of coz at the same time, turning their heads around looking if anyone had stalked them. Now that i realised how efficient their operations were.
